Our History

History is essential for survival. Its preservation is a necessity, for on the wings of history, greatness is carried forward. On that fateful day in December 2015, a group of five doctors gathered in the antenatal clinic for a meeting that would change the course of history. A decision was made to form a formidable association, and Dr. Adebola Seyi was elected as the first President.

The major challenge at the outset was establishing an association in a private, faith-based setting. Next came the task of convincing other resident doctors—who were not at the initial meeting—to join the cause, and finally, obtaining clearance from the hospital management to operate officially. Treaties had to be entered into, and roundtable discussions were held on the pros and cons of birthing an ARD at Babcock University Teaching Hospital.

From five, the number grew to ten, and then to fifteen, as the years went by. In its fifth year, under the leadership of Dr. Ajibola Emmanuel, the fifth President, ARD-BUTH began its quest to join the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD)—a dream that became a reality in 2021. That same year, several reforms were initiated, including improvements in the quality of call food and advocacy for better remuneration for resident doctors at Babcock University Teaching Hospital.

By 2023, under the leadership of Dr. Eguzoro Onyedikachi, significant changes in remuneration were achieved. This momentum culminated in a landmark agreement in 2025, under the current President, Dr. Bitto Msoo Sharon, to implement a salary structure equivalent to that of federal institutions—plus additional allowances.
